Marker Art

Markers are probably one of the most intimidating mediums for many people. It’s unforgiving and once put down, cannot be erased, consequently, many people are hesitant to use it. There are no UNDO buttons with markers. This is why I owe it all to Dave Fleming, who was my markers teacher. His technique was loose and he had no fear putting markers down on paper and I learned all my craft from him. Along with guys like Syd Mead, Ralph McQuarrie, Nilo Rodis, Joe Johnston and a few others, they set the stage for how I approach my work and I’m forever grateful for their contributions to design.

In the Vader sketch, if you look closely, I used Ralph’s Vader head from one of his paintings to learn his technique. It’s a form of reverse engineering to see how he did it. Thanks Ralph for letting me use it. It’s very much appreciated.
